Interview

"There are a lot of different duties within the 12 Charlie job and every one is important. If someone doesn't do there job right, we can't put the bridge together."

We're responsible for putting together all kinds of bridges, temporary and permanent. If it's a river, we can put up a temporary bridge for a quick crossing during combat, or, we can put up a Bailey bridge, which is a more permanent bridge.

I'm a boat operator, which is usually reserved for an advanced-level Bridge Crewmember. I drive the boat that pushes the pieces of the bridge together and I supervise a lot of the assembly.

A Bridge Crewman can also be a rope handler who brings the bridge pieces together; they can be part of the build crew; they can prepare the equipment for assembly or they can be part of the shore team, which puts the pieces of the bridge in the water.

I've been a 12 Charlie for 10 years and I started as a bay retriever and then went up to build crew. I was then trained on the boat, because I love driving the boat. It can be 900 degrees out and I still love being on that boat."
