"Identification is the AVENGER crewmember's main job. Before we fire any missiles, as the team chief, I have to make sure that there's an appropriate target. It's my job to identify that target. For that we use a laser range finder, a flare and then we have the capability to identify aircraft as friend or foe—both with ISF and with the naked eye. We study the symbols of different countries and the shape and symbols of foreign planes. We initially learned the models of fifty different aircraft in AIT but, once I started my MOS, we learned about hundreds more. So, before we do anything out there, before any action is taken, we go through a whole series of identifications and "what if" scenarios. We work along with MOS 14J (Early Warning System Operator). They use Sentinel RADAR. In the field, they’re usually set up somewhere else and they feed targets to the AVENGER crews through a small computer that gives us data from the Sentinel RADAR. Everything we get usually comes from the 14J, it’s really a team effort."
